Peter McKinnon x NOMATIC Everyday Camera Bag Review: Is It Worth It?

Great build quality, excellent versatility and a high price that may be worth paying.

There are a lot of camera bags out there. Some are designed to carry as much camera gear as possible. Others are basically regular backpacks with a few padded dividers thrown in. The Peter McKinnon x NOMATIC Everyday Camera Bag is trying to do a little bit of everything.

That is also what makes this bag so appealing.

The general consensus around the bag is pretty easy to understand: it is exceptionally well made, extremely versatile, and genuinely useful. It is also expensive. For me, though, the price is easier to swallow once you look at what the bag is actually built to do.

Build Quality Is One of Its Biggest Strengths

The first thing that stands out about the McKinnon bag is that it does not feel like a typical camera backpack. It is rigid and structured, the materials feel substantial, and the whole thing has a premium feel that is hard to miss.

The tradeoff is weight. This is not a lightweight backpack, especially once you load it with a camera, lenses, laptop and accessories. If you are chasing the lightest possible setup, there are better options. If you want a bag that feels like it can take some abuse, the extra structure makes more sense.

The Interior Is Where the Bag Gets Interesting

The McKinnon bag is not simply divided into “camera stuff” and “everything else.” Its modular interior lets you change how the space is configured depending on what you are carrying.

The 25L pack uses NOMATIC's Ladder System, allowing the proportions of the upper and lower compartments to be adjusted. You can dedicate more room to camera equipment when shooting or open up more space for everyday items when traveling.

That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons this works so well as an everyday camera bag. Take out the camera cube or dividers and you have a legitimate everyday backpack. Put them back in and you have room for a camera, multiple lenses, accessories and a laptop.

It Makes Sense for Photographers Who Carry More Than One Camera

If you are carrying a mirrorless or DSLR body, a couple of lenses, batteries, cards and accessories, the 25L version gives you a useful amount of space without feeling like you are carrying a suitcase.

There are multiple access points, a dedicated laptop compartment, tripod or water-bottle storage and a luggage pass-through. That combination is especially useful when traveling because you can keep camera gear, a computer and personal items in one bag.

The “Everyday” Part Actually Matters

A lot of camera backpacks are very obviously camera bags. The McKinnon bag is different. Its relatively clean exterior and modular interior mean you can use it as a normal backpack when you are not shooting.

But Let's Talk About the Price

This is the biggest criticism of the bag, and honestly, it is completely fair. It is expensive.

Once you start adding camera cubes and other accessories, the total cost can climb quickly. If you compare it to a basic backpack, the price looks ridiculous. If you compare it to other premium camera bags, it starts looking a lot more reasonable.

There are cheaper bags that will carry your camera just fine. I would not call the McKinnon bag the best value on the market. I would call it a strong investment if you know you are going to use it heavily.

There Are a Few Things I Don't Love

The rigid construction that makes the bag feel protective can also make it feel somewhat stiff. The bag is also relatively heavy before you put anything inside it, and a fully loaded pack can get substantial.

There have also been reports from some owners of zipper issues over time. That is worth knowing before buying, although the warranty and customer-service reputation make it less concerning than it would be with a no-name bag.
